Program

The Graduate Program in Literature Studies (PPGLit) at Master’s Degree level started its activities in 2011 endeavoring at that moment: i) to meet the university students’ demand for specialization in the area of literary studies; ii) to enhance and increase visibility for the Humanities at the Federal University of Sao Carlos; iii) to reflect on the role of literature in a national and international context affected by a reorganization of the areas of knowledge, marked on one hand by pragmatism and on the other by the remarkable circulation of information.

Since 2014, in order to continuing improving the Master’s Degree program as well as to apply for the Doctoral Program, the courses and research lines have been re-evaluated and tailored to reach a balance in numbers of offered courses as well as its objectives. This reorganization has been conducted through the close observation of the results and program impact on the graduates’ formation by the faculty members at the Program Council level.

PPGLit has promoted a constant evaluation of the program aims as well as the definition of targets which promotes the quality consolidation of its research outcomings and scientific production. PPGLit endeavors to provide its graduate students with a high level formation at the same time it promotes reflection on the literary object and its reception in Language and Literature Area, according to CAPES, both national and international funding agencies, and the Linguistics and Language and Literature Area.

Objectives

The main objective of PPGLit is to provide researchers and professor with a high level formation in the area of literature studies here understood as aesthetics, cultural and social forces in which the fictional text is constituted in order for them to work in the academy as well as in the market which demands the literary knowledge in Masters and Doctoral level.

Related to the main goal, there are others such as: 

(I) Providing the graduate student with a comprehensive and in depth knowledge of Literature regarding its aesthetics manifestations, its circulation as a cultural product and its relation to the historical-social context, other arts and disciplines.

(II) Providing the graduate students with a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and critical approaches to literature as tools for analysis and for the debate about different literary manifestations.

(III Providing the graduate students with a critical and reflexive formation in order to consciously act in society and his/her professional field.

(IV) Providing the graduate students with knowledge about the bibliography related to each research line of PPGLit as a tool for consistent investigations in Literature.

(V) Providing the graduate students with the opportunity to study the different national literatures present in the Program, its characteristics and specificities, dialoguing at the same time with critical tradition and current debate on them.

(VI) Conducting studies about different possibilities of interrelation to other disciplines and means in order to enrich the debate about the literary production.

(VII) Making possible the mastering of theoretical and methodological tools for the understanding of the specificities and range of the literary field.

(VIII) Enhancing the integration with the undergraduate students of Language and Literature Majors, at the Federal University of Sao Carlos and other institutions, for the Master’s Degree, and the integration of graduate students at UFSCar and other institutions, for the Doctoral Program.

(IX) Contributing for UFSCar to continue having a regional important role also aiming the national scenario, for high qualified researchers’ formation in Humanities.

(X) Consolidating the literature researches already conducted at UFSCar, from the organization and enhancement of Research Groups integrating undergraduation and graduation courses at USFCar in dialog with other Institutions, the insertion in National and International Forums of scientific and political debates.
